Extreme Makeover: Boodikka

Ok, exactly how do you go from this.....

.....to this?

Would you believe they're actually the same woman? Even the skin color is different.

The former image comes from Green Lantern#20 from the previous volume of the book. This issue marked the Bellatrix Bomber's comics debut and her first tryout for the Green Lantern Corps.

The latter image comes from the current volume of GL, specifically GL#11, part of the "Lost Lanterns" arc, specifically the point where Hal locates the Lanterns presumed dead during his "Emerald Twilight" rampage. You may remember Hal's rampage, specifically this scene....

Anyway, Boodikka and the other "lost Lanterns" were captured by Hank "Cyborg Superman" Henshaw. Now, either Henshaw is also a top-notch plastic surgeon, Superboy-Prime punched a few too many walls, or something really strange must have happened.

How else do you explain this?

What caused this "beautification" of Boodikka?

Where is it written that every female Geen Lantern has to be a beauty queen? Even the stone woman Drix has an hourglass figure.

So far we've seen Arisia, Katma Tui (now dead), Jade (also dead), Soranik Natu, her partner, Laira (now Red), and Raker's new partner, just to name a few, filling the "pretty female GL" category.

And now Boodikka, too?

Did we really need another? And did DC have to completely make over an existing GL just to get one?

C'mon, a little variety here!

Well, now that I've gotten that off my chest, I'm going to start reading the new "Alpha Lanterns" arc.

Wait a minute. What have we here?

Well, it's a start.

Uh...yeah, Boodikka has gone through a LOT of changes. Ivan Reis wasn't the first one to start prettifying her up however. She started out (like Brik) being pretty huge and hideous, but almost immediately, they started toning things down. If you go back and look through some of the Green Lantern Corps stories (the OLD ones) she's starting to look much nicer.

One of my favorite Boodikka stories is the one where she goes to see her Mother, they fight and insult each other, and in the end, she gives her flowers for Mother's Day. She's MUCH better looking in that story as well

Yeah, I know back in the 90's that other artists were softening her look from the original Pat Broderick rendition pretty much from the word "go".

Examples I remember were the Mother's Day story and "Green Hell" from GREEN LANTERN CORPS QUARTERLY, the Boodikka-Kreon team-up in GL:MOSAIC, and the infamous tryst with Lobo back in TRINITY, the GL/Darkstars/L.E.G.I.O.N. miniseries/crossover.

Still, for the most part, she looked suitably alien and zoftig. On her best day, she looked like a pasty Bizarro version of Barda. Plus, her skin color was still chalk-white. I lost track of her after the hand-ectomy, until the Reis GL issue, where the Bellatrix Bomber had not only been beautified almost beyond recognition, but seemed to have shrunk to the same size as Laira/Arisia/etc.

So I know this prettification process had alwys been happening, but in the Johns era it seemed much more drastic.

Heh. I had forgotten about the Boodikka/Lobo story, which is hilarious.

Boodikka is a hero, therefore she's GOT to be pretty. They've even prettified Brik up as well.
